Small Pet Problems & Care

I am that rare person that loves cats and dogs equally, but I have yet to find a smaller pet come even close to comparison.  As a child, my sister and I had parakeets.  Their life spans were very short, and since they were our first pets, I cried every time.  They were named Chi Chi, Cookie, Coco and Candy. Cookie, a blue and white bird, was my favorite, because I was around 8 and he was a gift to me.  Next we adopted Coco and Candy, a pair of yellow and green parakeets together, and were our last pet birds. It was hard to connect with them; they were loud, messy and so mean that we could rarely pet them without getting pecked.

Then my sister adopted a white gerbil with red eyes.  He reminded me of Bunnicula, a story I read as a child.  This gerbil also broke out of the cage from time to time, and he ended up staying in our living room.  One time, he started drinking from our dog's water bowl, and one time he simply got out and sat on top of his cage.  The time he was sitting on the top of the cage, I was the last one awake in the house, and when I turned off the TV to go to bed, I simply saw red eyes staring at me.  It startled me, but I put him back in his cage.

None of the pictures on this page are of the pets in my post, but each are very similar to what they looked like.
White Gerbil with Red eyesGreen Frog

My dad created a small pond in our old backyard and put a turtle in it.  The turtle literally walked away one day. There were rumors for years after that people saw him in the much larger development pond, and I choose to believe he is there to this day.  My sister tried getting a frog next.  It ate crickets, and the crickets would escape from the cage, so she started keeping the frog's cage in our bathroom.  As a teenager, I was not at all happy with this arrangement.

Sulcata Tortoise
This Sulcata looks a lot like Morty.
Chris has a sulcata tortoise that's probably about a decade old now.  I have no idea as to what gender he is, but I named him Morty.  Morty is mildly entertaining.  Kita thinks he is a ton of fun and of course tries to play with him despite Morty's disinterest.  The cats stare at him, but don't get very close.  With Pearl's hunting instincts, we keep him well away from her.  On sunny days, we let him out in our fenced backyard and he strolls around for hours eating grass.  He alerts us that he wants to go out by bumping his shell into the wood side of his cage.  The sound is louder than you would think, so he typically gets his way.  Apparently, this species lives very long and gets very large, but we'll deal with that much later in life.  I wish our dogs and cats would live so long!

I have also had some experience with raising bunnies, but I will write about that soon.  Chris and I are pretty big animal lovers, and even though smaller pets aren't my favorite, I have had mostly positive experiences with them.  While I am definitely not an expert, feel free to ask me questions and I can probably point you towards more helpful information.  If you are looking for an animal that will love you back, I think cats and dogs are the way to go, but frankly, I'm quite biased, so don't take my word for it.

New Tips on Saving Money on Everyday Items

I've been on a bit of an extreme couponing fix for a few weeks and I thought I'd share some tips that I learned along the way.  One note before I begin: please don't end up buying items and hoarding them as some of the extreme couponers on TV.  Due to the reduction of food stamp funding, there are many worthwhile charities that you can give the food that you can't eat, and of course animal shelters could also use pet food donations.

Load coupons to your store loyalty cards by typing your card information onto the following sites:
Of course all of the sites above and many more have coupons that you can print out.  You can also sign up on savingstar.com.  It works slightly differently as the coupons don't automatically deduct from your purchases.  Instead, they are added to the site and you can choose to either get the money from them or spend it in their online store.

Kita shares his toys with baby sister PearlThink about the brands that you use everyday. This can be more difficult than you think due to the many brands bought by larger brands.  Proctor & Gamble is a great example here, but there is also Nestle which owns Purina and many more brands that you can find by visiting their site and scrolling to the bottom.

There are coupons, rebates, sales, contests and more on many of these sites, but you have to look for them. Think about the pet food brands & toys, your favorite boxed, canned and frozen foods, soaps and cleaning supplies, then visit their sites to find their deals or join their email lists so that you receive new deals directly from the brands.
Kita shares his toys with his best kitty pal Seph
Kita shares his toys with all of his
siblings, whether they want it or not!

All of this can save you quite a bit of money next time you go grocery shopping, but it will take a little bit of time to get started, so don't get frustrated and give up!  The money you save can be used for so many other things and any extra items that you end up with can be donated to people and animals that would be so grateful to have them.

I had a conversation with Kita about the Congress today

"I know that you've had that toy since you
were a puppy, but you have to give it up."

Why do I need to give up my toy?
Why?

"The Republicans want it.
And the rest of your toys.
Also, they want your bed."

What will I get?
Well, what do I get?

"Nothing"
This doesn't seem very fair.
This is a joke, right?
It doesn't seem very fair.

"Sorry, boy, but they are too
stubborn to compromise."

Pearl the Puppy joins the Family

Pearl and Kita meet for the first time.
First Day Home
Chris and I have talked about getting a puppy sister for Kita for years, but the timing never seemed right. Siberian Huskies are very social dogs and Kita seemed lonely lately, so we decided that this summer would be a good time to bring in a new family member. Kita is the coolest adult dog in the world, but Siberian Huskies puppies are very tough to raise and I thought one Husky at a time was enough for now. I also felt it was important to adopt a mixed breed as they are less likely to find homes.

First Week Home
Pearl the puppy has webbed feet so we are almost positive that she is part Labrador Retriever, but we are unsure about her other breed(s). Her legs are very long and her tail is long and thin, but overall she is a much smaller dog than Kita was at her age. We aren't sure of her exact age, because we are her 4th home, but when we got her at the end of July, we were told that she was 2-3 months old, so right now, she's likely about 5 months old.

Pearl is an anxious puppy
Pearl has separation anxiety to the point that she cannot be left alone for a second. This is probably due to her being taken from her mother at a very young age. Luckily, she's usually alright if Kita or one of our cats are in her line of vision, but whenever Kita goes outside without her, she throws a temper tantrum, howling and crying until he comes back. To make it easier on her, Kita now does his business very quickly and runs back in the house to see her. In the mornings, when I am making coffee in the kitchen, our cat Seph will sit near her cage until I come back into the living room.

Pearl loves to chew.
If I am out of her line of vision at night, because our bed is too high for her to see the top, I have to remind her that I'm still in the room or she will begin to whimper. My cat, Zoey has actually figured this out, so he lays at the end of the bed where Pearl can see him. This is likely due to him being annoyed by the howling, but I do appreciate his help.

If she is particularly lonely, she works herself into such a frenzy that she exhausts herself and falls asleep. Kita usually tries to make sure this doesn't happen by laying next to her crate or bringing her a toy. He has very much become a father figure to her and is very attentive to her needs. Her behavior is getting a little better over time as she seems to be realizing that we always come back.

This is definitely a new chapter in our lives, but we are facing it patiently and we look forward to watching her grow up. It is very cool that our other pets are helping us keep her calm, and I am so proud of them as I know this is a major disruption in their lives that they didn't expect.

You can take a cat out of the wild, but it is much harder to take the wild out of the cat

Zoey on his cat perch
We are completely dedicated to keeping any pet cat that we have as an indoor-only cat.  This can be tough when you have a former stray cat, because they know all of the amazing possibilities on the outside, including bugs, small animals to chase, places to hide, and plenty of things to mark.  To combat this urge, we have a cat tree in one window ,a cat perch in another window, and something by almost every window that allows them to sit and watch the outside.  We also keep bird feeders outside of a couple of the windows so that they have plenty of critters to look at for hours at a time.

However, we could not always provide these luxuries.  When we lived in a condo complex, we subleased from a landlord that said we could have cats even though the condo complex itself didn't allow them.  We did not realize that this meant they could not look out the windows without having neighbors call the complex on us.  We had to keep all of our windows covered, but the cats would find any way that they could to look outside, and we really couldn't blame that aspect of their personalities.

Kita and Seph wait by the window.
Worse yet, when Seph managed to sneak out our front door, he was actually shot at after a few hours.  Thankfully, this caused him to run back into our house (where we were waiting for him with all of our doors open in the middle of winter), but not soon after, our landlord called to ask if we could give up our cats.  This simply was not an option.  Instead, we stayed for the remainder of our contract and moved to a place better suited to having pets, which also allowed us to get our dog, Kita.

This story is only one small example of what pet-owners have to consider when finding a place to rent.  When looking for a place online, the simple filter of "allows pets" limits the possibilities by A LOT.  What if we didn't have the resources to find a place that did allow us to keep our cats?  Luckily, that wasn't the case, but the house we live in now is very old and on a main road.  It was one of the few options available to us since our cats are not disposable items to us.  I really wish that this would change, and pet owners weren't often forced to give up their pets when moving to a new home.  I think it happens a lot and is a cruel fate to the animals that end up in a shelter or even a new home without the people that they are often so attached to.  We are very lucky to be able to keep the pets in a house that we don't own, and I wish other pet owners the same good fortune.  I also make a plea to pet owners to continue and expand their search for new homes in order to take their pets with them, and a plea to landowners to understand that pets are family members and that they should consider opening their rentals to responsible pet owners.

Tuxedo Destiny

When I was in college, I had the good fortune to bring two stray cats into their forever homes.  Both of those cats just so happened to be tuxedo kitties.  The summer before my last year in college, I found a friendly stray cat outside of a friend's house.  I told my friend that if the cat didn't leave his yard within 48 hours to call me and I would come pick him up.  I got the call two days later and had a cat carrier ready to take him to the apartment that I shared with 2 roommates.  I instantly bonded with "Messy" and he slept on my bed every night and followed me wherever I went.  Within a few weeks, however, our landlord found out about the cat and said that we had to give him up.

As it turns out, my cousin's best friend had two elderly cats that had recently passed away.  She was devastated about her loss and didn't want to take in a new cat, so we asked her to take the cat for a few days until we found him a new home.  Two days later, she had already fallen in love with him and decided she would keep him and name him Fritz.  Fritz was lucky enough to live out the last 6 years of his life with someone that truly loved him and he waited until she got home from work and died of old age in her arms not long ago.

The following summer, another friendly tuxedo cat showed up at Chris's door while we were sitting on his front porch.  At this time, Zoey was a kitten and Chris's roommate already had a grown male cat, so we fed the scrawny cat but thought that it was best for us not to take in a third cat at the time.  However, after about 3 days on our porch meowing and sitting on our laps, we decided to let the grateful cat into our lives, and Seph has moved from home to home with us ever since.

Unfortunately, many cats in the college town I lived in aren't able to find forever homes.  Every year, when school ends, college students return to their original homes and leave their pets without a second thought.  At the beginning of each summer, stray cats show up all over town and many of them are ran over or taken to the overcrowded shelter where they are often euthanised.  This  is a sad reality that I can't wrap my head around, but I am happy that I was able to find forever homes for two of the town's abandoned cats. If you find a stray cat, think if anyone you know would be willing to give the cat a temporary or forever home.  I believe that cats find us for a reason, and the some of the best cats choose their forever homes by simply walking up to a door in hopes of some food and love.

Kita & Doggy Daycare

Around election time, if Chris and I are working a lot of hours, we take Kita to Petsmart's Doggy Daycare a few times a week.  We had brought him to a different daycare a few times, but they only let the dogs play about an hour a day and he wasn't all that excited to go back.  That is not the case with Petsmart.  Kita is as happy as a kid at Christmas if he even thinks that we are going to Petsmart.  He has learned the name of the store, and certain stores and signs on our drive trigger his assurance that we are, in fact, going there.

Kita howling excitedly.
When Kita is excited, he howls.
Once we get in the store, Kita pulls us directly through all of the food and toys and into the doggy daycare attached to the store.  He has a few favorite dog-sitters there, and if he sees them before we check in, he starts jumping around excitedly and gives them kisses.  Once he is checked in and taken out of the front room, he couldn't be happier to get to the playroom immediately and doesn't give us another thought.  They let the dogs there play for 7 hours with just a 1 hour lunch break, so Kita is sufficiently worn out by the time we pick him up in the evening.  They give us a card telling us about his behavior for the day and which dogs he made friends with.  We hear that Kita is one of
the most popular dogs there, and he tries to get all of the dogs involved in
whatever they are playing.

Kita shows how happy he is for the cameraThis doesn't surprise us a bit, because Kita is a social butterfly that loves to meet all new people and animals.  On walks, we have to talk to everyone, because he wants to greet every person and dog he sees. This started as a puppy, because bad as he was, he was an adorable pup with soft fur and everyone would rush to meet him.  Now some of our neighbors still call him "the prettiest dog in the neighborhood", but Kita doesn't get quite the same amount of excitement out of new people.  Regardless, he gets compliments a lot and couldn't be happier about someone petting him and telling him how handsome he is and I can't help but agree.  Just know that if you adopt a Husky, you will have to talk to people a lot about your dog as people don't see them everyday and have a lot of questions about the breed.

Seph's Rules for our Household

I've posted before about how our senior cat, Seph tends to babysit all of us and make sure that we are all accounted for. Aside from that, these are the rules that we've learned to follow if we don't want a cranky cat for the rest of the day.

Schedule:  He picks what time we get up in the morning, no matter what ridiculous hour it may be.  Don't get up too early or he has to be woken up, and that is not acceptable.  At that time, he must receive food in his bowl even if he doesn't plan to eat it yet.  By the same token, he does not like it if we go to bed early or later than our usual time, and when he decides to go to bed, we need to pick him up to put him on it, even though he's capable of jumping there himself.

Food:  If any other pet has eaten from his bowl, it must be cleaned before he is willing to eat out of it again. He will not try new foods if he doesn't immediately like the smell.  He must be fed directly prior to one of us leaving or he will not let us out the door.  Additionally, for no apparent reason whatsoever, food can't touch the side of his bowl or he will not eat it.

Attention:  Laps must be available to him at all times; should he choose to sit on one.  Once he is on someone's lap, they may not sneeze, move him in any way, nor stop petting him exactly where he wants to be pet at that moment. If another pet is getting attention and he decides to walk over and lay on his back, it is time for him to get attention instead.

Daily Habits:  Loud noises out of the ordinary are unacceptable, whether coming from inside or outside of the house.  All doors in the house must be left open at all times just in case he has the desire to enter that room.  Other pets are to step around him, regardless of whether he may be directly in the middle of the room or near his path..  If a dog thinks that he can enter the space that he is currently occupying, that dog will get smacked.

If we follow these rules and don't otherwise annoy, ignore or move him, we don't have to deal with any of the following reactions for the day:

Seph the tuxedo cat is not happy.
Angry Duck Stance
When Seph looks like an angry hippo, you should probably leave him alone.
Extremely Angry Hippo Stance

Seph puts his ears back and turns away to show his anger.

Kita the Copy-Cat

We adopted Kita, our Siberian Husky, when he was about 2 1/2 months old and not much bigger than our adult cats.  I've blogged before about how Kita adores our tuxedo cat, Seph, but there is more to that relationship. Kita, now 5 times larger than the cats, idolizes Seph as a "big brother" figure and thinks that he should be allowed to do everything that a cat can do.  To reach that goal, Kita has taught himself a few tricks and ridiculous habits.

Seph laying at Kita's feet.

Huskies are intelligent and are also known to imitate others.  Kita takes his imitation very seriously and spends a lot of time perfecting his cat-like abilities.  His size limits some of these abilities but Kita isn't really one to give up easily (or ever).  One part of his body that he has successfully used in ways similar to our cats are his paws.  As you can see in his youtube video, Kita has learned to balance toys in the air with his front paws while laying on his back.  He additionally uses his front paws to grab anything he can't reach, to catch big toys in the air, to cheat at tug-of-war by using both his mouth and paws and to kick around balls with the dexterity of a child soccer player.  If the cat uses his paws for anything at all, Kita is most likely watching him and attempting to find a way that he can also accomplish that task.

Kita thinks that he can climb on any of our furniture since he sees the cat do it.  Obviously every part of a couch, chair or table is impossible to keep a cat off of, but a 65 lb dog attempting to climb from the couch to our living room table is not the least bit graceful nor good for our furniture.  Of course, this hasn't stopped him yet and he continues his attempts to reach spots that are easily jumped onto by our cats.  Seph is allowed to sleep on our bed so Kita thinks he can do the same.  While Seph can fit on the edge of the bed, Kita needs to take up one entire side and put his head on one of the pillows.  We've yet to let Kita stay on the bed for longer than a few minutes, and he instead sleeps in a crate in our bedroom.  Kita is blocked by parts of the house with baby gates, while Seph can easily travel from room to room.  Seph can fit into small boxes (click here to read a post dedicated to Seph's love of boxes) or stand on the top of our couch. Kita is still working on ways to get around these limitation; I'll let you know if he figures any of them out.

Zoey's Favorite Things

As I've posted before, Zoey is a bit of a scaredy-cat and slightly overweight, so he isn't the most active kitty.  He's afraid of dogs, so he spends a lot of time in our bedroom away from the rest of the family.  Worse yet, we have to cage him at night and when we are gone so that he doesn't get into everything and pee everywhere.

Zoey eats everything: any type of cat food or treats, dog food, human food and anything that looks like it might be edible.  He once ate part of our fake Christmas tree.  You might think we don't feed him enough but we feed him multiple times daily and more than our other cat, Seph.  Worse yet, we get yelled at by our vet for him being overweight (he is 13 lbs on a good day), but if we limit his food he just finds other things to eat that are worse for him.

The only time he ventures out into the family room is while the dog is outside so that he can eat any dog food that may be left out.  He knows that he has a limited amount of time before I notice and remove the food bowl, so he walks low to the ground very slowly, fill his mouth with as much food as possible, and then runs into another room so that he can dump the food and eat it at his leisure.  His leisure, of course, is about 2 gulps without chewing done within a 30 second time span.  I'm not thrilled about this trait as dog food is not good for cats, is more expensive and it certainly doesn't help solve his weight problem.

There are a few more things that make Zoey happy.  One is a laser pointer.  However, he can only play with this for a short period of time before he gets tired and simply watches the laser rather than chasing it.  He chases balls and other cat toys for about the same length of time.  He likes to hide and jump out at Seph in an attempt to catch him in a surprise.  Seph is very observant, however, so I've yet to see Zoey successfully surprise him.  Both Zoey and Seph enjoy sitting in front of a window watching birds, squirrels and bunnies, so we put a bird feeder near 2 of the windows to increase the animals' visits to our yard.  This is what we call "TV for cats" and it can keep them busy for hours.  Zoey has a habit of pushing Seph off of the perch to make more room for himself, and Seph typically takes this in stride and finds another window to look out.

Zoey the CatFinally, Zoey loves to cuddle.  This is my favorite part of his sometimes frustrating personality.  The best part of Zoey's day is when I am in the bedroom reading my Kindle or watching television because He can lay on my stomach and put his nose to my face.  I assume this is his way of expressing affection, but I could do without a cold nose against my own nose or forehead.  He also purrs and puts his neck out so I can rub his chin.  Despite the fact that Kita is our pride and joy and that Seph is a lot more well-behaved and is always around, at these moments I can see the gratitude and true loyalty that he has to me and I know that he loves me more than he loves anyone or anything in the world.  Something in his big eyes at these times says it all. His frustrating qualities are somehow forgiven and I know that I'm very lucky to have him in our lives.

Kitten AdoptionMany people would not put up with Zoey's five years of bad behavior, and many people told me to give him up over the early years.  That's the thing about pets: they can drive you crazy when they are younger, but most of them settle down eventually.  We give them toys, food and attention, and that is typically paid back at some point.  So frustrated pet-parents and people put off by the expense and the amount of work that they require, hang in there, because they add more to your life than they can ever take away and their gratitude and loyalty last forever.  Don't give up on them.  Right now, Zoey and my kindle are waiting for me to come and relax, and any further blogging can be postponed for another day!

Pet Separation Anxiety

I had never stayed away from my dog for more than a few days until I stayed with my grandparents for the entire week.  I was so anxious to see Kita and play with him.  When I finally got back yesterday, he was fairly indifferent towards me.  He was tired from playing at Doggie Daycare all day while Chris picked me up, so that might have had something to do with it, but I was slightly disappointed.  After he woke up a bit, he is acting the exact same way he always does with me.

I'm thankful that Kita is equally attached to Chris and I, because he is content spending time with either one of us, because our cats are definitely not like that.  They both express anger if we leave them for a few days, but when only one of us is gone it depends on which one of us has left.  When Chris leaves for a night or more, Seph sleeps facing our front door waiting for him to come home.  He throws in a long whine here and there to let me know he is not happy.  As usual, Zoey showed his displeasure with my absence by peeing on our bed and in our laundry baskets.  He never does that unless I leave him for more than one night.  Seph greeted me when he got home, but otherwise he didn't seem to mind me being gone.

I've always thought that Zoey's behavior was his way of showing his anger over me leaving and to tell me not to do it again, but then today I read this Catster article that claims that they are "mingling their scent with the scent of their beloveds."  I don't know about that, but at least one pet is very happy to have me home!

If you haven't done so already, check out Zoey's Catster profile and add him as a friend to your own cats if you also use the site.

Why I'm Not a Fan of Fireworks

After dealing with fireworks for two nights in a row, I must say that my tolerance for them is even less than before.  Due to budget cuts, our town chose to cancel the official fireworks show this year.  As a result, there were more amateur fireworks than usual.  In Ohio, it is legal to buy fireworks, but illegal to set them off, which is just one of many laws in the state that are completely perplexing to me.  Regardless, each year, people set them off everywhere without suffering legal consequences.  I believe that people should not be legally barred for doing anything that does not harm anyone other than themselves, but most of the time there are kids and pets nearby as they go off, leading to potential endangerment.

All of our pet's ears move to the side or
back when startled
There were more fireworks last night and they were louder (and closer) than the night before.  Kita refused to go outside last night after a few fireworks had gone off.  When we managed to drag him out and put him on his leash, he would not move from directly outside the door.  As a result, he went to bed without going to the bathroom, whined this morning, and is still refusing to venture into the yard.  Zoey hid in my closet while the fireworks were going off.  Seph behaved very strangely; his eyes grew large with each sound and his heart was beating rapidly.  He made sure that all of us were under his constant supervision last night, so he didn't take his evening naps.  Unfortunately, this didn't cause him to postpone his 7 AM breakfast time!

What really matters is that all of us are safe at home, and I am grateful for that.  Hopefully the fireworks won't continue throughout the weekend, but it is very possible, based on past experience, that they will. As long as no one gets hurt, I can't complain much.

Have a great day

Since it is a busy day for many, I didn't want to take up too much of your time.  If you are celebrating the 4th of July, please make sure that your pets are safe at home.  It is the day that the most pets go missing out of the year.

This is a picture from today.  We found Kita laying directly behind Seph in the same position as him.  He loves to copy that cat!

Kita the Husky loves Cartoons

When Kita was about a year old, we realized that he had an interest in cartoons. Turn on the Simpsons and he would be mesmerized. Now we leave Cartoon Network on for him when we leave the room, and he often jumps up on to the couch and stares directly at the TV.   He also will watch Animal Planet for short amounts of time, but really only if he hears a dog or cat and it gets his attention. At first I thought it was a coincidence and he was just looking in the direction of the TV, but he sometimes reacts to things that happen by moving his head or adjusting his eyes or ears. He also stares directly at me as if I'm forgetting something if I turn off the TV before I leave the room.

Watching TV is only one of his strange habits. He actually hates to be left alone for long periods of time, but if his cat buddy Seph is in the room with him, he is perfectly content. While Seph sleeps in his favorite box (Don't even ask!), Kita lays as close to the box as he possibly can. His love for that cat amazes me, because it is not exactly mutual admiration. Kita gets concerned that everyone is having fun and leaving him out, because if all of us are in a different room than him, he stands by his baby gate with the saddest eyes. Those blue eyes get us every time and he knows it and uses it to his advantage regularly, including when he is begging for scraps. It is a very unfair tactic on his part, but its also our fault for giving in more often than we should!
